Do you feel like you have too many things to do? It seems like I always have a long list of people who I’d love to get together with. I have stacks of books laying around my office and night table waiting for me to pick up. The list of things to do at my house gets longer instead of shorter. There is no shortage of things I can do and my calendar has taken on a life of its own. This can obviously be stressful at times. There are leaders and speakers who have made careers out of telling us how to calm our calendars. I’m pretty sure I have a book in one of my piles that talks about this., if I only had the time.
Not only can this style of life be stressful but when we run at this pace, we can tend to get our priorities out of balance. I think as individuals, as families and as leaders, its good to take some time to evaluate our lives. We need to look at our priorities to ensure that we keep the important things important. Just this morning I was sharing my list of priorities with a friend. If you are a believer in God, then scripture has helped us determine the sequence of what should be at the top of our list. In Matthew 6 Jesus warns us about worrying about what we will drink or what we will eat or even what we will wear. In other words, we are so caught up in the cares of this world that we forget what’s truly important. Matthew 6:33 says “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you”. Seek ye first is a pretty clear picture of priorities. Next on the list is our family. If you are married, then your spouse comes before your children. Then comes our gifts. Are you using what’s inside you to better your family and community? Lastly comes our jobs.
The sad part is that many of us have this sequence completely backwards. We give our jobs the best of our time and emotions; whatever is left over goes to our hobbies and our families. If we have a few minutes left over, then we try to squeeze God in. Let me encourage you, God sees you and He knows your heart. Come to Him today and invite Him in to be the center of everything you do. You will find that when we get God back in His place of importance in our lives, everything else has a way of working itself out.
